STEP 1: REVIEW THE PUBLIC HEARING MATERIALS
The purpose of this project is to replace the existing bridge on Route 178 (Shields Bridge Road) over Occohannock Creek in Accomack County in order to provide safety and enhanced traffic flow for the area. The existing steel span bridge, built in 1933 has been determined by VDOT to be structurally deficient and is scheduled for replacement.
This project includes the replacement of the Occohannock Creek Bridge and improvements to the approach roadway and tie-in work on either side. The proposed replacement bridge design provides more than 9 inches of additional clearance than the existing bridge. The project also includes installation of sheet pile walls adjacent to Occohannock Creek to contain fill material. Guardrails are also proposed on all bridge approaches and departures.
The existing bridge will be closed to traffic prior to demolition, with detour information provided to re-route vehicles during construction. Residents will be provided with information about potential traffic impacts and detours in advance of construction.
